Iwo Jima Veteran to Speak
Marion “Frank” Walker, one of a very few living soldiers who survived the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II, will make a presentation on Saturday, January 9th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
Some of the events of the battle will be related by Frank Walker to the audience. Iwo Jima was the deadliest battle in all of Marine Corps history per square mile of territory. Frank Walker was part of Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment, 5th Marine Division.
Mount Suribachi and Iwo Jima have become icons in the history of this country;yet few Americans know much about these events. It is a story “not for the faint of heart”, but a story that should be told to all generations.
Those in attendance will learn about the flag raising on Suribachi-as Frank Walker was one of the few who made it to the top of the extinct volcano, and still continued through the rest of the campaign.
